Dr. Joanna Gardner is in charge of our laboratory. We utilize procedures standardized by the University of Minnesota and the National Mastitis Council. Quarterly, we participate in Cornell University’s laboratory proficiency test to ensure that we are up-to-date and accurate. The charts below contain more information on the in-house services that we provide.
Before submitting samples for the first time, please call our office and ask to speak to Dr. Gardner for detailed instructions on sample collection, labeling, and handling. Results can be reported to you by your preference of a variety of options: phone, email, fax, or Google Drive (formerly Google Docs). At this time we do not culture for Mycoplasma in our laboratory; if requested we forward samples to the University of Minnesota Udder Health Laboratory for mycoplasma culturing.

Clinical mastitis:

Our goal for individual cultures of quarters with grade I and II clinical mastitis (the cow is not systemically ill) is to provide rapid results for use in culture-based treatment. That means waiting to treat the cow until we report to you which organism is causing the infection. This allows for selection of an appropriate intramammary antibiotic, frequency of administration, and duration of therapy aimed to cure an infection with that particular organism. For more information on culture-based treatment, please see our Milk Quality page and our Archive of Milk Quality Columns.
Preliminary results can be reported to you at approximately 24 hours after samples are plated, if desired. Final results will be reported at approximately 48 hours after plating.
Individual cow milk samples that cannot be delivered to our office within 12 hours of collection should be frozen. For samples arriving within 12 hours, only refrigeration is necessary.
In order for samples to be plated on the same day they are submitted to our office, frozen samples should arrive by 2:00pm and refrigerated samples by 3:00pm. Samples received later are usually not plated until the following morning.
